There were dramatic scenes at the Copper Box Arena on Saturday night as Dave Allen sensationally knocked out Johnny Fisher in their highly anticipated rematch.

Fisher (13-1, 11 KOs) , seemingly ahead on the cards, was taken apart in frightening fashion by Allen in the fifth round.

Much like their first fight, Fisher started well, boxing on the back foot and working behind his jab in the opening rounds. As the fight progressed, he mixed in body shots and uppercuts, landing regularly. That being said, Allen (24-7-2, 19 KOs) never looked flustered, taking the shots well and landing a couple of sharp overhand rights of his own.

It was calculated from Allen. The game plan was clear: get Fisher into the second half of the fight, then put it on him.

Coming in at a career-high 265 lbs, Allen showed no signs of slowing down as he broke Fisher down in the fifth round.

The round began with Fisher sticking to his jab, just as he had since the opening bell. But after four energy-sapping rounds, constantly on the move, the signs of fatigue were there.

Allen landed a big overhand right and a left hook to the body, then repeated the dose as Fisher returned fire downstairs. Allen complained to the referee about the shots, and they did look low.

As Fisher stepped back, another left hook sank into his body, stopping him in his tracks. Then came the big right hand. Fisher was shaken to his boots. Allen swarmed him with uppercuts before a couple of heavy overhand rights sent Fisher crashing to the canvas.

Fisher got up at the count of eight, but his legs were gone. With just four seconds left in the round, Allen launched a barrage of hooks to the body and head, the last two landing flush on Fisher’s chin. Fisher dropped like a felled tree, sprawled out on the canvas as the bell rang in the background.

Referee Marcus McDonnell waved it off as Mark Tibbs, Fisher’s trainer, threw in the towel.

Any controversy surrounding their first fight was well and truly put to bed.

A fantastic performance from Allen puts him line for more exciting domestic fights.

  • Jimmy Sains won the vacant Southern Area Middleweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Gideon Onyenani (110-90, 98-92, 100-91). A workmanlike performance from Sains, who gets his first 10-rounder under his belt and moves to 10-0 (9 KOs).
